Pet references
It’s a good idea to be prepared when looking for a new home for you and your pet. For larger animals it can be well worth seeking a reference from a previous landlord highlighting the fact that you are a responsible owner and that your pet is well behaved. Ask your previous landlord to write the reference.
If you have not rented with your pets before, you could ask your vet to help by seeing if they would be kind enough to write a quick reference. They will not be able to vouch for you as good tenants but they can highlight how well behaved your pet is and reassure prospective landlords that you are a responsible owner. They can also indicate where you provide routine health care for your pet.

Example of a good pet reference
To whom it may concern:
Reference for Buster Smith
I am pleased to be able to write this letter
of reference for Mrs Pamela Smith and her
dog Buster.
Mrs Smith has rented my two bedroom flat in
London since April 2006. During that time I
have found her to be both a responsible tenant
and pet owner. I have experienced no problems
as a result of Buster living in the property.
Buster is a friendly dog who does not bark or
cause a nuisance to the neighbours. Whenever
I have visited the property, he has been very
well behaved. I have seen no evidence of Buster
having caused damage to the property or
furnishings. Mrs Smith has always kept the
property clean, tidy and free of dog odours
and hairs.
I have no hesitation in recommending Mrs Smith
and Buster to you as tenants.
If you would like to discuss this further,
please call me on xxxxx xxxxxx.
Kind regards,
Mr A Davies

Without your help, and Outlet’s, we would still be in a temporary hotel and my pets in a cold shed. We were so relieved to have found somewhere so quickly
