Brixton, London was the meeting place of the ancient Brixton hundred of Surrey. It wasmostly waste land until the beginning of the 19th century, the main settlements being around Stockwell, Brixton Hill and Coldharbour Lane. The opening of Vauxhall Bridge in 1816 led to a process of suburban development. The largest single development, and one of the last in suburban character, was Angell Town, laid out in the 1850s on the east side of Brixton Road; it was named after a family which owned land in Lambeth from the late 17th century until well into the 20th. Brixton was part of Surrey until the creation of the County of London in 1889.
The last surviving windmill in London, built in 1816, and surrounded by houses built during Brixton's Victorian expansion, is to be found just off Brixton Hill. The nearby 'Windmill' pub is named after it.
Brixton today has a strong Afro-Caribbean presence and has a very vibrant, diverse mix people. Windrush Square near the Tate Library was created to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the modern Afro-Caribbean community on the Empire Windrush. Nelson Mandela visited Brixton in 1996.
Brixton Market is a great place to shop for food. It has one large supermarket and a large independent department store (Morleys). There are some good restaurants and an excellent choice of bars, clubs and music venues people come to from all over London and beyond.
There is also an excellent park (Brockwell Park) which has excellent views over London from the top of its hill and a great and recently refurbished open air 30s Lido. Brocwell Park holds various fairs and festivals during the summer, including the annual Lambeth Country show in July which is a unique event not to be missed. There currently is a big effort to regenerate the area, particularly by modernising or rebuilding much of Brixton's social housing. Otherwise, there is an excellent choice of properties from flats to Victorian garden houses. Due to its proximity to the West End and its great choice of bars, clubs and music venues, the area attracts many young affluent people.
