We love Shadwell

Living in Shadwell, London

Experience diversity, character and a real London community in Shadwell.

Following on from the example set by uber-trendy Shoreditch, Shadwell is fast becoming one of the city’s new, sought-after gentrified areas with its stylish warehouse conversions and close proximity to central London.

Its location, right in the heart of east London, has seen the area become increasingly popular with those looking to buy in the city at a reasonable price in recent years, and Shadwell’s wonderfully diverse community and excellent transport links have only helped raise the district’s stock with house hunters.

Shadwell property

What’s less than 20 minutes from the city, enjoys close proximity to the River Thames (including some attractive waterside properties and yet is still relatively cheap? Shadwell is certainly well worth looking at for a property investment, especially with the DLR offering good connections, Crossrail opening, and an eye on HS2 in around ten years’ time.

There are a lot of ex-council properties in the area, along with some traditional terraced houses. However, many new developments are appearing too, with Shadwell an important part of the East London regeneration scheme, and more new homes scheduled to be built here than almost anywhere else in the Capital. Shadwell is definitely starting to gentrify in earnest as well, and the coffee shops and artisan boutiques are beginning to appear too.

We say:

Full of colourful character and a culturally diverse population, Shadwell is a shining example of a real London community. In the past, the area hasn’t had the best reputation, but today, an influx of modern apartments have seen a real sense of vigour injected into the district. Ideal for commuters who like to avoid the dark, with the DRL and Overground connecting you to the rest of the city.

Your neighbours

The Neighbours
A fairly young district, Shadwell is popular with degree-educated professionals looking to get on the property ladder in London. There’s also a vibrant Bangladeshi community which is reflected in the area’s local shops and restaurants.

Having the likes of Shoreditch on your doorstep without having to wade through a sea of top knots and waxed moustaches on your way to the DLR.

Shadwell is incredibly well connected both by the DLR and the London Overground line. With the former, you can be at Bank in 15 minutes, while the latter means you can venture north for a night out in Islington, or south to bargain hunt in East Dulwich’s legendary charity shops.

The Overground also means you are well-connected to Shoreditch and Dalston for those times when you absolutely must have a cocktail in a jam jar with a name you cannot pronounce.

Sights around Kings Cross

Kings Cross Travel

As the London Docklands areas continue to be rejuvenated, Shadwell’s popularity will only begin to rise. Surrounded by creative hubs, culturally important landmarks and historic neighbourhoods, the district is located right in the centre of everything that’s so popular about east London, but it remains affordable.

Artistic Flair

The difference with Shadwell is its working class roots, something that can still be seen in the area today. It’s this sense of grit and determination that really sets it apart from other areas in the east - real people live, work and mix here. Because of this, there are plenty of authentic, family-run places to eat in the area, covering everything from quick eats to sit-down meals.

Great places to...

Efes

Eat

Efes
230 Commercial Road

No restaurant in the area typifies Shadwell’s bustling character quite like Efes. This authentic Turkish restaurant combines the traditional dishes of the region with contemporary decor to marvelous effect, adding to the dining experience. The tables are snuggly lined up next to each other to enhance the atmosphere, but it’s the way the food is cooked that steals the show. Succulent meats are prepared to perfection over a charcoal barbeque after being marinated in the spices that make Turkish food so tasty.
