East London Area Guide

East London - The City, The East End ...and a new beginning

Arguably the most historic part of London, the east is home to the area known as ‘The City’. Here ancient churches and medieval houses are joined by big business, which takes place within the walls of architecturally splendid listed buildings.

Move further east and you’re in the East End, the heart of what was once the London of Dickens. Tradition has it that you’re meant to be born within the sound of Bow Bells (of the church of St Mary-le-Bow) if you’re a true Cockney – working class Londoner – but the truth is that East London  has welcomed generation after generation of immigrants, proud to call themselves Londoners, even if born on the other side of the world.

With the decline of the docks, not to mention extensive bombing during the war, the East End fell on hard times. Nowadays, though, much of it is thriving, with Docklands reborn as smart offices and exclusive flats, while areas such as Bow and Woolwich are undergoing extensive regeneration ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, with Stratford hosting many of the events. This, combined with its proximity to the financial and business centres of the City, has made East London popular with young professionals and investors alike.

The famous Brick Lane, known for its curry restaurants, has evolved into a hotspot for food, fashion and art lovers. This along with hip and happening Shoreditch has made East London a place where the cool kids hang out. Music fans living here can also take advantage of the buzzing new O2 Arena or the more traditional Hackney Empire.

So, as a cockney might say, why not take a butcher’s at some gaffs soon? Or to put it another way, check out the property we have in East London.

Because of wartime bombing, there are more modern, purpose-built properties here than in other areas of the capital, but a good deal of property was run-down anyway by the time the war came, so in some ways that’s not a bad thing. Plus there are still a good number of beautiful period houses, plus conversions, both for sale and to rent, including short-term lets.

Certainly at Outlet the East London property we offer tends to come in all shapes and sizes, which means there’s usually something to suit all tastes and budgets. In addition, we manage various properties in East London – for details, have a look at Outlet property management
