Property for sale or rent in Clerkenwell EC1
In the 17th century, Clerkenwell had a reputation as something of a resort, and was once home to several spas and tea gardens. In fact the original name comes from Clerk’s Well. The well itself is still in existence, attached to the 1980s edifice, Well Court on Farringdon Lane, and you can arrange a guided visit with the Islington Local History Centre.
With the onset of the Industrial Revolution, Clerkenwell became a centre for the brewing, distilling and printing industries. It therefore comes as no surprise that Clerkenwell has reinvented itself as a trendy and hip place, hosting the largest concentration of young design and media professionals in any comparable space anywhere in the world.
Clerkenwell’s rich history still remains etched on its buildings and embodied in its architecture, making a leisurely walk around its streets very enjoyable. A broad selection of independent shops and boutiques are a treat for the shopaholic, housing a variety of bags, scarves, shoes, vintage gear and classic records. Exmouth Market is also a great place for lunch, and you might also want to stop off at Smithfield, London’s meat market, to buy a hunk of something to take back for your dinner.
In fact when it comes to gastronomy, Clerkenwell boasts a rich portfolio with such restaurants as St John and Café du Marche. It also hosts a wide array of pubs and bars including some of the best restaurants in London, not forgetting the assortment of nightclubs for those looking to wind down after a long day. On the cultural side, Sadler’s Wells is a world-famous venue for dance and the performing arts in all shapes and forms.
On a hot afternoon, you can wander around the Leather Lane market for handbags, scarves, food, jewellery and High Street brands at affordable prices. You might also come across some pirated DVDs, which of course you'd never even think of buying.
