Property for sale or rent in Waterloo SE1

Originally marshland with a few cottages, the Waterloo area was redeveloped and the marshes drained in the 19th century. After the opening of Waterloo Railway Station in 1848, the surrounding area became known as Waterloo.
 
At the northern end near the river are the Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Hayward Gallery to the west, the National Film Theatre below the road, and the Royal National Theatre to the east.

Just to the south in the middle of a large roundabout with underground walkways is the British Film Institute (BFI) London IMAX Cinema. The main centre of the BFI is by the river itself.

The whole area is known Waterloo Quarter, a designated business improvement district, and while it is indeed proving more and more attractive to business, it’s also on the up as regards living space. In particular, Waterloo is increasingly attractive to young professionals working in the city who enjoy the proximity of the good choice of arts exhibitions, concerts and plays.

A little further to the south of Waterloo is St. John's Waterloo church, built in 1824 to celebrate the culminating victory of the Napoleonic Wars. To the East is the Union Jack Club in Sandell Street and, further on, the well-known and historic Old Vic Theatre to the south of the corner with The Cut.

There’s little in the way of proper greenery around Waterloo, apart from Jubilee Gardens and Gerald Mary Harmsworth Park. However, for a walk in the fresh air, nothing beats the South Bank, just as long as you’re not tempted inside by all the museums, theatres, restaurants and galleries along the way. And one way, of course, to check out the area from a different angle is to take a trip on the London Eye.

Despite being a main crossing of the river and having a major station, Waterloo's surrounding areas are very tranquil, with a choice of ex-council flats and new luxury developments crafted from formerly unappealing office blocks. There are also some narrow streets around the station with attractive Victorian cottages.

Transport links – First and foremost, of course, Waterloo Station itself offers first class links with the rest of London and much of the South of England. Just across the Thames are Embankment and Charing Cross, and also nearby are Southwark and Lambeth North tubes.  Between these, it’s easy to get almost anywhere in London and beyond quickly. Schools – There’s a good selection of primary schools in Waterloo, and several secondary schools nearby, while Southwark College is just down the road.
