Property Vauxhall

Vauxhall Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Vauxhall SE11, SE1

There’s no mention of Vauxhall in the 1086 Domesday Book, although the area used to be part of the Manor of South Lambeth. In 1317 King Edward II granted the manor of Vauxhall, Surrey, to Sir Roger d'Amory for helping out at the Battle of Bannockburn.

The land was flat and parts were marshy and poorly drained by ditches. Development of the area started in the mid-18th century. Prior to this, it provided market garden produce for the nearby City of London.

It is generally accepted that the name Vauxhall is from Faulke de Breaute, the head of King John's mercenaries, who owned a large house in the area which was referred to as Faulke's Hall, later Foxhall, and eventually Vauxhall.

The area only became generally known by this name when the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens opened as a public attraction. Initially most visitors would have approached by river, but crowds of Londoners of all classes came to know the area after the construction of the first Westminster Bridge in the 1740s. Even today, you can also have a pleasant walk along and across the river and reach the West End in half an hour.

Vauxhall Motors originated here, and Vauxhall Cross is also home to MI6, headquarters of British intelligence. There are many fine restaurants and bars in Vauxhall, and it’s also known for its gay clubbing scene, for which today it rivals Soho. Indeed, colloquially it’s known as ‘Voho’.

That said, there’s plenty of entertainment and facilities for all in Vauxhall, including fine facilities for children in Vauxhall Park. Children also love the ever-popular Vauxhall City Farm.

Today, large numbers of MPs have homes in Vauxhall, and many government buildings and light industry firms are located here.

Properties in Vauxhall

There’s a good mix of property available in Vauxhall, which is becoming an increasingly popular place to live in. Property ranges from ex-council blocks through to numerous period conversions and beautiful Georgian townhouses in quiet squares. The area along the river has been redeveloped in recent years, and there are some stunning (albeit expensive) penthouses in the Gabriel’s Wharf complex.

Bonnington Square, which was taken over by squatters in the 70s and 80s, has attractive properties, and is also famed for its low cost cafes and restaurants.

More and more businesses have moved to Vauxhall in recent years, as rents are much lower than just across the river, and there’s a broad variety of commercial property available.
