Property for sale or rent in Stockwell SW9, SW8
The name Stockwell probably comes from ‘stoc’, the Old English name for a tree trunk or post, which was presumably located near a well. What is knows, is that it was a rural area, complete with market gardens, up until the beginning of the nineteenth century, when it started to become a middle-class suburb.
For much of the last century it didn’t do so well, becoming a poorer area, and was heavily bombed in the war. Those local residents who headed for the tube during a raid were better protected than others - Stockwell station was London’s first deep-level tube, and during the war, it was also one of eight stations to have a deep-level air-raid shelter beneath it, large enough to hold around 1,600 people.
Stockwell offers good choice of bars, cafés and restaurants, many owned by the Portuguese community of around 27,000 which has developed there, giving it the name of ‘Little Portugal’.
For green spaces, there are one or two minor gems such as Slade Gardens, while Larkhall Park features an AstroTurf football pitch and even cricket in the summer. However, for something more substantial, you need to go a little further afield to Brockwell Park, Clapham Common or Kennington Park.
Famous residents past and present have included Will Self, Sir Roger Moore, Joanna Lumley and even Vincent Van Gogh for a while.
