Property Oval

Oval Area Guide

Property for sale or rent in Oval SE11, SW8

Surprisingly for such a small area (it has a population of around 12,000) Oval manages to straddle both south-west and south-east postcodes, as well as two different London boroughs. It’s because it’s essentially a crossroads, where Brixton, Clapham, Vauxhall and Kennington meet.

The Oval is world famed for its cricket ground, which is the largest in the UK and was also the biggest in the world, until eclipsed by one in Pakistan not long ago.

In the eighteenth century, Kennington Oval was a market garden and was, and still is, owned by the Duchy of Cornwall. Surrey County Cricket Club was set up in 1845 when the Duchy of Cornwall granted ‘a lease of the land for the purpose of a cricket ground’.

It rapidly became popular and in 1868 there were 20,000 spectators at the Oval for the first game of the 1868 Aboriginal cricket tour of England, the first tour of England by a foreign side. The gasometers which overlook the ground were built shortly afterwards, in 1853.

There are plenty of other attractions within walking distance, and the spacious Kennington Park is a popular local amenity. Directly opposite the cricket ground is Ovalhouse theatre and arts centre, South London’s leading fringe venue, complete with two stages, gallery, café, bar and dance studios.
