Our personal favourites
With Covent garden literally on the doorstep to our office we all venture into this neck of the woods on regular occasions, mostly it has to be said to be watered and fed but with the added vantage of some wonderful shopping (as long as you go early to avoid the crowds)
Cheap eats
It’s not easy to find a cheap eat in Covent Garden but these few do the job and fill you up at the same time.
Battersea Pie – proper British food tucked away in one of the refurbished arches with obviously an array of pies on their menu. Self service simplicity. 28 The Market, Lower Ground Floor, Covent Garden, Royal Opera House, London WC2E 8RA
Dishoom – Bombay style cafe with an all day Indian menu. Great food at terrific prices but it can come with a long queues. Wonderful for a quick breakfast. 12 Upper St. Martin’s Lane, London WC2H 9FB
Bageriet – a Swedish fest of savoury snacks and sweet treats. It may be small but it is certainly stylish and full of Nordic goodies. Yum yum! 24 Rose Street, London WC2E 9EA
Fine dine
Hawksmoor – Fantastic underground venue serving incredible steaks, it does not come cheap but life is too short sometimes to look at the bill – get someone else to pay. 11 Langley Street, London WC2H 9JG
Clos Maggiore – Very romantic setting with quite elegant and delicious food. 33 King Street, London WC2E 8JD
Balthazar – wonderful for both breakfast and theatre pre & post meals. Reliable and fun and beautifully decorated. 4-6 Russell Street, London WC2B 5HZ
Shopping
Although Covent Garden has over the years become a bit over crowded with chain band shops it is still a fashion destination for many and a wonderful place to find something different.
Y3 – it here because we like it ok. Yoji meets Addidas in the most perfect sort of way. It’s not what you want but how many. 12 Floral Street, London, WC2E 9DH
T-shirt Store- the name says it all and its simplicity is adorable. Organic printed tees with retro cool imagery in limited runs. Always worth popping in as everything always changes. 18 Shorts Gardens, WC2H 9BE
James Smith & Sons – the boss swears this is the only place to buy an umbrella and who are we to argue. The shop unchanged since the 1830’s is worth a visit anyway. 53 New Oxford Street WC1
Neal’s Yard Remedies – located in our favourite spot of Covent Garden and selling prettily packaged organic niceties. Always smells wonderful. 15 Neal's Yard, London WC2H 9ER
Neal’s Yard Dairy – ok so we don’t stray very far but being huge cheese fans means you have to go here if you are a true cheese lover. Different smells hit the nose on entering here – delightful we think. 17 Shorts Gardens, London WC2H 9AT
Pint Perfect
We still retain the fact that you cannot beat a decent pint in a great pub. Finding them harder to locate these days here are a few you might find us on occasions.
Lamb and Flag – Traditional spit and sawdust British boozer serving decent beer by friendly staff in a very historic building. A diamond amongst the chains and overpriced tourist traps. Rose Street, London WC2E 9EB
The Harp – Thankfully low priced booze with an astonishing selection of ciders and ales to please even the most selective of beer buffs. We think it was once voted National Pub of the year, too tight to. 47 Chandos Place, London WC2N 4HS
Lowlander Grand Cafe – A quieter pub tucked more off the beaten track but worth seeking out if you are a Belgian beer fan with always over a dozen on tap. 36 Drury Lane, London WC2B 5RR
Cocktails and late nights
We like our late night drinking places tucked away and, by the looks of it, underground ....
Phoenix Arts Bar – so this is located a stones throw from our office but we do love this legendary late night bar. Go before 8.00 p.m. to ensure entry at weekends. 1 Phoenix Street, London WC2H 8BU
Freud – staggering distance from the previous haunt another classic place to hang out. Mind boggling selection of cheap but amazingly good cocktails. 198 Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8JL
