Russell Wells - Q and A
What inspired you to work in property?
I think that when most people think about dealings in the property sector they think of the financial aspects as an investment, as security, as a primary income, as a secondary income etc, but for me the most interesting and rewarding aspect of the whole field is finding people a home, and one in which they will be happy and comfortable. There is no greater reward for me than being thanked by tenants for helping them to find a great flat at the right price sometimes after a long journey, and from landlords, who are eternally grateful to me for finding reliable and trustworthy tenants. There should be no conflict between providing a great personalised customer service to clients and tenants alike, and in making a healthy profit – the two should go hand in hand and not be mutually exclusive.
What values do you feel are important in working for Outlet?
The most important aspect to me is the personal touch, so actually listening to what the applicant wants and ‘going the extra mile’ both for the potential tenant/buyer and for the landlord/vendors. A great deal of our business comes from personal recommendation, both from landlords and former tenants, which is only possible by looking after both parties through careful and diligent attention to all aspects of the process, and not going for the ‘hard sell’, unlike so many other agencies.
Where is your favourite place to live in London?
The West End. I have l lived in Soho/West end for over 20 years and feel completely at home with its vibrant and transient mixture of the old and the young, the gays, the straights, the bisexuals, the trannies and the not-quite-sures; the party people and the poets, the comics and the down-and-outs; the well-healed and the impoverished, the smart set and the trashy, all getting on with each other in a delicious melting pot and despite what may appear to be , there is a real sense of community – where did I go at 8.30pm when all the shops were closed to borrow a baking tin for a last minute birthday cake? Maison Bertaux in Greek Street of course; where did I go for a bottle of wine when other restaurants were closed? Cafe Espania in Old Compton Street of course; and whom did I call when I had no heating or hot water at 8pm on a Friday night and my lodgers were screaming at me? Lawrence – Soho’s favourite plumber who lives in Brewer Street, of course.
What are your favourite things to do in London?
‘People watching’ in Soho , late night cinema, walks along the South Bank, effervescent club-nights in Vauxhall, Sunday lunches in gastro-pubs; browsing book shops in Charing Cross Road.
Best night out in London?
There are so many and most of them for me have in the past involved drinking with friends at too many obscure and wonderful venure to mention. However my best day was for my sister’s surprise 40th birthday, organised by her husbanda and I, and to which we invited the whole family. We started with a long and delightfully lazy boat trip along the Thames right up to the Cutty Sark and followed by a lavish lunch at the top floor restaurant in the Oxo tower. this was followed by a private pod trip on the London Eye....so memorable as it was the first time that all the family had been together for years and we all cried at the end of it...
Favourite motto?
“Do to others what you would have them do to you” which is a bit too biblical, so I put it : “treat others the way you would like to be treated”.
Russell likes:
Baked potatoes, Hot strong tea, Google Box, Choral music, Real wood floors, Laphroaig single malt whisky, Big floppy hats, Late night cinema, White beaches, Kindness

After months of meeting many agents of many agencies, we're can't quite believe that someone can be so good at telling what we have in mind. Everything you said about any place so far, seen or not, is honest and after our heart.
If you were to ever suggest a flat to us, we'd see it a blink, because you have a great sense of both clients and properties. Also, as you know, we're ready to sign on the spot, should the place be right.
A real pleasure seeing you again,
Mirona
Russell has just secured a 6-month contract for the flat at a very high price which is much appreciated. He has answered more calls from me, answering my questions and never once made me feel like I was bothersome (which I might have been). He also gave me the much needed confidence that in fact the flat would rent and that he had it under control--which he had. There was a mere 1 day gap from the last tenant to the current one and this was for cleaning and inventories. I am extremely grateful. His positive attitude and his professional style impressed me greatly.

I really appreciate all that you've done, Russell. You're not doing a lot to uphold the stereotype of real estate agents by being so friendly, efficient and helpful!!! Thanks a million.
Nick
Just a little mail to thank you on your help. You've been very efficient even under my excessive pressure ;-)
