Property for sale or rent in Marylebone W1
Marylebone was named after "St Mary's" church (now known as St Marylebone Parish Church) which was built on the bank of a small stream or "bourne" called the Tybourne or Tyburn, which used to run along what is now Marylebone Lane. The church and the surrounding area later became known as St Mary at the Bourne which, over time, became shortened to its present form, Marylebone.
A large part of the area to the west of Marylebone High Street was developed by the Portman family and is known as the Portman Estate. Home House in Portman Square is famed as one of the best-preserved Georgian houses in London. Another significant portion of the district, including Marylebone High Street itself and streets to the west, is the Howard de Walden Estate.
Such place names in the neighbourhood as Cavendish Square and Portland Place reflect the Dukes of Portland landholdings and Georgian-era developments. Marylebone is also famous for Harley Street, with its myriad of private medical practices. In addition, the area houses many boutique shops, as well as fashionable bars and restaurants.
It’s been a fashionable place to live since the seventeenth century. Famous recent residents have included Madonna, Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney, and in days gone by, Charles Dickens, HG Wells and Pitt the Elder.
