Property for sale or rent in Belgravia SW1
Most of Belgravia came into the hands of heiress Mary Davies in 1666. Her dowry not only included "The Five Fields" of modern-day Pimlico and Belgravia, but also most of what is now Mayfair and Knightsbridge. In 1677 Mary married Sir Thomas Grosvenor. The Grosvenors, until this auspicious marriage, were not well off. Through the development and good management of this land, that all changed.
Richard Grosvenor owned and developed most of the area from the 1820s, with Thomas Cubitt in charge of most of the development. Today, much of Belgravia is still owned by Grosvenor’s descendant, the Duke of Westminster.
Belgravia is characterised by its grand terraces of white stucco houses, with Belgrave Square and Eaton Square being some of the most well-known and sought-after locations. Many embassies are also located in Belgravia.
For green spaces, there’s a good number of leafy squares, while Green Park and Hyde aren’t far away. Shopping is excellent – within a few minutes’ walk you have Peter Jones and many leading fashion names, with Harrods and other leading department stores just a little further afield. In addition, the boutiques, art galleries, specialist food stores and restaurants of Elizabeth Street and Motcomb Street give the area something of a village atmosphere.
Numerous prime ministers, foreign dignitaries, business leaders and cultural figures have lived in Belgravia, and today it is home (or second or third home) to many high net worth individuals, attracted by its location and the fact that it’s quieter than neighbouring Chelsea and Knightsbridge.
Properties in Belgravia
Large Regency houses in Belgravia are among the most expensive anywhere in the world. Although in the heart of London, it remains a primarily residential area where you can live in peace and quiet while being close to all the best that London can offer.
Many of the period houses have been converted into hostels or hotels, and few residential properties come on to the market (and are very expensive when they do). However, there is a better choice of flats, apartments and penthouses for sale and rent, along with some lovely mews conversions.
