Property for sale or rent in Mayfair
The name Mayfair has a simple derivation – it comes from the fair that was held in the area every May from around 1680.
Much of Mayfair was developed as a prestigious residential area in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, with leading landlords including the Grosvenor and Rothschild families.
Grand and imposing in many places, nevertheless, around Shepherd’s Market, the maze of streets and alleys provides an atmosphere which is almost village-like. For peace, quiet and wide open spaces, both Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are on its boundaries.
Many of London’s hotels are situated in Mayfair, and leading auction houses, designers, jewellers, antiques dealers and providers of luxury goods are all well represented, particularly in and around Bond Street. Savile Row is synonymous with bespoke tailoring, and for more mainstream shopping, Regent Street and Oxford Street need no introduction. Naturally, you can also dine at some of the finest restaurants in the capital, or sip cocktails at world-famous bars.
Mayfair is home to both the rich and powerful, with the US and many other embassies within its boundaries, and elites from across the globe living or maintaining homes there. Historic private members’ clubs also abound. Many leading multinationals also have their headquarters in Mayfair.
Properties in Mayfair
The most expensive square on the Monopoly board, not much has changed as regards Mayfair property prices since the game was devised early last century. It’s still one of the most exclusive addresses, if not the most, in all of London, and you should expect to pay accordingly.
Mayfair is full of grand houses, but many have long been converted to commercial properties. Magnificent period houses do come on to the market, but the bulk of available property is in flats and apartment blocks, some for sale, many for rental, including short-term lets.
