Property for sale or rent in St James's SW1
St James’s (or plain St James as it’s sometimes shortened to) is a compact area that until a few hundred years ago was completely undeveloped, it being part of the large royal park whose remnants are today’s Green Park and St James’s Park. The latter is actually the oldest park in London, with St James’s Palace, now the home of Prince Charles, as its hunting lodge.
In the 1660s, King Charles II gave it to Henry Jermyn, the Earl of St Albans, who turned it into a mainly aristocratic area, complete with a grid of streets featuring various noble names, including that of Jermyn himself, but also including Duke Street, Duke of York Street, King Street, Charles II Street and so on.
Other venerable street names include the Haymarket, Carlton House Terrace and Pall Mall. The latter is particularly known for its various gentlemen’s clubs, still thriving today. The area is also famous for its auction houses and art galleries, with the most famous recent addition being the White Cube in Mason’s Yard.
For entertainment, there are the theatres of The Haymarket, along with a good choice of extremely upmarket restaurants and boutiques. Alternatively, for some sightseeing and people watching, head for Buckingham Palace or stroll down to the palaces of Whitehall. St James’s Church in Piccadilly also hosts frequent musical events.
As for open spaces, take your pick between Green Park and St James’s Park itself (complete with the beautiful Duck Island cottage in the latter).

One of the most exclusive addresses in London, there are a few period houses to be had, but for the most part, available property is studios and flats, all greatly in demand given the location.
